چکیده

Biomedical imaging has become ubiquitous in both, basic research and the clinical sciences. Technology advances, and the resulting multitude of imaging modalities, have led to a sharp rise in the quantity and quality of such images. Whether for epidemiological studies, educational uses, monitoring the clinical progress of a patient or translational science purposes, being able to integrate and compare such image-based data has developed into an increasingly critical component in the Life Sciences and eHealth domain. Image processing-based solutions have difficulties when the underlying morphologies are too different. Ontologybased solutions often lack spatial precision. In this paper, we describe a compromise solution which captures location in biomedical images via spatial descriptions using so-called fiducial points. The work is discussed in the context of biomedical atlases and includes, in addition to the introduction of the basic method, some experimental performance results.

Cyberinfrastructure for the digital brain: spatial standards for integrating rodent brain atlases

Biomedical research entails capture and analysis of massive data volumes and new discoveries arise from data-integration and mining. This is only possible if data can be mapped onto a common framework such as the genome for genomic data. In neuroscience, the framework is intrinsically spatial and based on a number of paper atlases. This cannot meet today's data-intensive analysis and integratio...

Three-dimensional solid texture analysis in biomedical imaging: Review and opportunities

Three-dimensional computerized characterization of biomedical solid textures is key to large-scale and high-throughput screening of imaging data. Such data increasingly become available in the clinical and research environments with an ever increasing spatial resolution. In this text we exhaustively analyze the state-of-the-art in 3-D biomedical texture analysis to identify the specific needs o...

The digital anatomist information system and its use in the generation and delivery of Web-based anatomy atlases.

Advances in network and imaging technology, coupled with the availability of 3-D datasets such as the Visible Human, provide a unique opportunity for developing information systems in anatomy that can deliver relevant knowledge directly to the clinician, researcher or educator. A software framework is described for developing such a system within a distributed architecture that includes spatial...

Representation and visualization of variability in a 3D anatomical atlas using the kidney as an example

Computer-based 3D atlases allow an interactive exploration of the human body. However, in most cases such 3D atlases are derived from one single individual, and therefore do not regard the variability of anatomical structures concerning their shape and size. Since the geometric variability across humans plays an important role in many medical applications, our goal is to develop a framework of ...

Using image mapping towards biomedical and biological data sharing

: Image-based data integration in eHealth and life sciences is typically concerned with the method used for anatomical space mapping, needed to retrieve, compare and analyse large volumes of biomedical data. In mapping one image onto another image, a mechanism is used to match and find the corresponding spatial regions which have the same meaning between the source and the matching image. Image...
